Cub Scout Pack 183 – Carney, MD

Cub Scouts is a family program — and our pack thrives because of caring adults who share their time and talents.

Whether you can help every week or just occasionally, there is a place for you in Pack 183. No prior scouting experience is required.

Why Volunteer?

Adult volunteers make Cub Scouting possible. By volunteering, you:

  • Support your child’s growth and confidence
  • Help create a safe, fun, and welcoming environment for all Scouts
  • Build friendships with other families
  • Model service, leadership, and community involvement
  • Make memories alongside your child

Many parents tell us that volunteering is one of the most rewarding parts of Cub Scouts.

Ways to Get Involved

We welcome help at all levels of time and commitment:

🌟 Den Leaders & Assistant Den Leaders

  • Work directly with a small group of Scouts (same grade level)
  • Lead hands-on activities using provided materials
  • Meet 1–2 times per month
  • Training, guidance, and support are provided

🎉 Pack-Level Volunteers

  • Help with pack meetings, events, or special activities
  • Assist with planning campouts, Pinewood Derby, or service projects
  • Support advancement, communications, or logistics

🧩 One-Time or Occasional Helpers

  • Help with games, crafts, or setup at meetings
  • Lend a hand at special events
  • Share a skill or hobby

💡 You don’t have to do it alone — Cub Scouting is a team effort.

What’s Required to Volunteer

To ensure the safety of all Scouts, adult volunteers complete the following:

  1. Adult Volunteer Application (online)
  2. Background check (included with registration)
  3. Youth Protection Training (free, online, about 90 minutes)

Training is straightforward, and pack leadership will help you every step of the way.

How to Become a Volunteer (Step-by-Step)

  1. Express interest — talk to a pack leader or email our Membership Chair
  2. Complete the adult application through the BSA system
  3. Take Youth Protection Training
  4. Get connected with a role that fits your availability and interests

You can start small and take on more later if you wish.

We’ll Support You

You are never expected to figure things out on your own. Pack 183 provides:

  • Clear guidance and role descriptions
  • Shared planning and resources
  • Training and mentoring
  • A welcoming, judgment-free environment

If you care about kids and are willing to help, you’re already qualified.

Volunteer FAQ

Do I need prior scouting experience?

No. Many of our best volunteers are brand new to Scouting. Training, materials, and support are provided.

How much time does volunteering take?

It depends on the role. Some volunteers help at meetings or events occasionally, while den leaders typically spend a few hours per month. We’ll help you find a role that fits your schedule.

Do both parents need to volunteer?

No. While we encourage every family to help in some way, volunteering is flexible and based on availability.

Is training required?

Yes. Youth Protection Training is required for all registered adult volunteers. It is free, online, and designed to keep Scouts safe.

Can I volunteer even if I can’t attend every meeting?

Absolutely. Many roles are shared or event-based, and we value any time you are able to give.

Are there any costs associated with being a volunteer?

No. All training and registration costs are reimbursed by the pack.
